What Counts as a Business Day?
A business day is any day when normal commercial operations take place — typically Monday through Friday. Weekends (Saturday and Sunday) are excluded, and public holidays are usually excluded too, though they vary by country and region.
This distinction matters more than you'd think. "5 days" and "5 business days" can differ by nearly a week. If someone promises delivery in 5 business days on a Thursday, you're looking at the following Thursday — not Tuesday. Missing that distinction has caused everything from missed deadlines to contract disputes.
This calculator handles the maths for you. It counts weekdays between two dates or adds a specified number of business days to a start date. Public holidays aren't included automatically (they vary by country), so subtract any that fall within your range.
Business Days by Month (2026)
| Month | Total Days | Business Days | Weekend Days |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 31 | 22 | 9 |
| February | 28 | 20 | 8 |
| March | 31 | 22 | 9 |
| April | 30 | 22 | 8 |
| May | 31 | 21 | 10 |
| June | 30 | 22 | 8 |
| July | 31 | 23 | 8 |
| August | 31 | 21 | 10 |
| September | 30 | 22 | 8 |
| October | 31 | 22 | 9 |
| November | 30 | 21 | 9 |
| December | 31 | 23 | 8 |
What this means for you: A standard year has 260–262 business days before subtracting public holidays. The UK has 8 bank holidays, dropping it to ~252 working days. The US has 11 federal holidays (~251 working days).
Where Business Day Calculations Matter
Contracts & SLAs
Service level agreements typically specify response times in business days. "3 business days" is legally different from "3 days" — and the calculator helps you verify compliance.
Project Planning
Sprint planning, delivery milestones, and Gantt charts all need business day counts. A "2-week sprint" is 10 business days, not 14 calendar days.
Shipping & Delivery
"Ships in 3-5 business days" is one of the most common shipping promises online. Knowing the actual delivery date prevents frustrated customers.
Legal Deadlines
Court filings, planning applications, and regulatory submissions often have deadlines measured in business days. Getting it wrong can mean missed filings.
