Understanding the Islamic Calendar
The Hijri calendar is a purely lunar calendar — each month begins with the sighting of a new crescent moon and lasts 29 or 30 days. Unlike the Gregorian (solar) calendar which tracks Earth's orbit around the Sun, the Islamic calendar tracks the Moon's orbit around Earth. This gives it a year of about 354 days, roughly 11 days shorter than a solar year.
That 11-day difference means Islamic dates "move" through the Gregorian calendar. Ramadan, for instance, falls about 11 days earlier each year — cycling through all seasons over approximately 33 years. A Muslim born in 1990 CE has experienced Ramadan in summer, autumn, winter, and spring, with the fasting hours varying dramatically between seasons.
