Hanafi Asr starts when shadow = 2x object height. Standard starts at 1x. Hanafi is typically 30-75 minutes later.
How Prayer Times Are Calculated
Islamic prayer times aren't arbitrary — they're derived from the position of the Sun. Each prayer corresponds to a specific solar event: Fajr starts at dawn, Dhuhr at solar noon, Asr in the afternoon when shadows lengthen, Maghrib at sunset, and Isha at nightfall. The exact moment depends on your geographic coordinates, the time of year, and which calculation method you follow.
The calculation methods differ primarily in the angle of the Sun below the horizon used for Fajr (dawn) and Isha (nightfall). The Muslim World League uses 18° for Fajr and 17° for Isha, while ISNA uses 15° for both. A steeper angle means a later Fajr (closer to sunrise) and an earlier Isha (closer to sunset). The difference can be 15-30 minutes.

The Five Daily Prayers
Fajr (Dawn)
2 Sunnah + 2 Fard
The pre-dawn prayer. Its time begins when the first light appears on the horizon (astronomical dawn at the configured angle) and ends at sunrise.
Dhuhr (Midday)
4 Sunnah + 4 Fard + 2 Sunnah
The midday prayer. Begins when the Sun passes its highest point and ends when the Asr time begins.
Asr (Afternoon)
4 Fard
The afternoon prayer. In the Hanafi school, it begins when an object's shadow equals twice its height plus the noon shadow. Other schools use a factor of 1x.
Maghrib (Sunset)
3 Fard + 2 Sunnah
The sunset prayer. Begins the moment the Sun disappears below the horizon. Scholars recommend praying promptly.
Isha (Night)
4 Fard + 2 Sunnah + 3 Witr
The night prayer. Begins when the red twilight fades (at the configured angle below the horizon). Can be prayed until midnight or before Fajr.
