    How Age Calculation Works

Age is calculated by breaking down the time between two dates into years, months, and days. The calculator subtracts full years first, then full months from the remainder, then counts the leftover days. This gives you the familiar "32 years, 5 months, and 12 days" format rather than a single large number.

For the total breakdowns (weeks, hours, minutes), the calculator counts the exact number of calendar days between the two dates and multiplies accordingly. A 30-year-old has lived roughly 10,957 days, or about 262,968 hours — numbers that feel surprisingly large because we rarely think in those units.

    Leap Years & Calendar Systems

The Gregorian calendar adds a leap day (29 February) every four years, except for century years that aren't divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 was not, and 2100 won't be either. This calculator handles all of these edge cases correctly.

If you were born on 29 February, your birthday only occurs every four years on the calendar. In non-leap years, most countries legally treat 1 March as your birthday — though some jurisdictions use 28 February. This calculator counts your exact age regardless, using the precise number of days elapsed.

Different cultures use different calendars. The Islamic (Hijri) calendar has 354-day years, so someone who is 30 in Gregorian years is about 31 in Hijri years. The Hebrew calendar is lunisolar, the Chinese calendar combines lunar months with a zodiac cycle, and the Ethiopian calendar has 13 months. This calculator uses the international Gregorian standard.

Chronological vs. Biological vs. Mental Age

Chronological age is simply the time since birth — what this calculator measures. It's the number on your driving licence and passport.

Biological age reflects how well your body functions compared to the average person of the same chronological age. It's influenced by genetics, diet, exercise, sleep, and stress. A 50-year-old marathon runner may have the biological age of a 38-year-old, while a sedentary 50-year-old might be biologically 60.

Mental (cognitive) age measures intellectual development relative to age norms. Originally designed for children, it compares problem-solving ability, memory, and reasoning to population averages. Vocabulary and general knowledge actually increase well into your 60s, even as processing speed peaks in the late teens.

    Zodiac Sign Tables

Two of the world's oldest astrological systems assign personality traits based on your date of birth. The Western zodiac uses your birth month and day to assign one of 12 signs, each linked to an element and ruling planet. The Chinese zodiac uses your birth year in a 12-year cycle of animals, each associated with an element and character traits.

    Life Expectancy by Country

Life expectancy is a statistical average, not a personal prediction. It represents the average number of years a newborn is expected to live based on current mortality rates. HALE (Healthy Life Expectancy) measures the average years lived in good health, free from disability or serious illness. Data from WHO 2024 estimates.

    Key Life Milestones by Age

From first steps to a century of life, these are the ages that mark significant transitions in most people's lives. Some are biological, some are legal, and some are cultural — but all are universally recognised.

    AgeMilestone
1First birthday — most children take their first steps around this age
5Start primary school in most countries
10Double digits — a big milestone for kids; criminal responsibility age in England & Wales
13Officially a teenager; minimum age for most social media accounts
16Driving age (USA, UK provisional); can leave school in some countries
18Legal adult in most countries; can vote, marry, sign contracts, join the military
21Legal drinking age (USA); traditionally the 'key to the door' milestone
25Brain fully developed (prefrontal cortex matures); car insurance premiums drop significantly
30Saturn Return in astrology; peak physical fitness for many endurance sports
40Often called 'over the hill' — but peak career earnings typically begin in your 40s
50Half century; AARP eligible (USA); free NHS health check (UK); reading glasses often needed
60Retirement age in many developing nations; senior discounts begin; state pension age in some countries
65State pension age (many countries); Medicare eligibility (USA); Freedom Pass (London)
70Average global retirement age; 'three score and ten' — the biblical lifespan
75Life expectancy in many developing nations; driving licence medical review in some countries
80'Octogenarian' — roughly 1 in 3 people in developed nations reach this age
90'Nonagenarian' — fewer than 1 in 20 reach this age globally
100Centenarian — congratulatory letter from the King (UK) or President (USA); roughly 1 in 5,000 people

    Your Age on Other Planets

A "year" on any planet is simply one complete orbit around the Sun. Since each planet orbits at a different distance and speed, a year on Mercury (88 Earth days) is wildly different from a year on Neptune (165 Earth years). If you're 30 on Earth, you'd be over 124 on Mercury — but you wouldn't have completed a single year on Neptune.

The table below shows how old a 30-year-old Earthling would be on each planet. To calculate your own planetary age, divide your Earth age by the planet's orbital period in Earth years.

    Physical & Cognitive Peak Ages

Every physical and mental ability has a statistical peak age — the point at which the average person performs best. These are population averages, not personal limits. Individual results vary enormously based on training, genetics, and lifestyle.

    AbilityPeak AgeNotes
Muscle strength25–30Declines ~1% per year after 30 without training
Sprinting speed25–27Usain Bolt set world record at 23
Marathon running28–33Eliud Kipchoge broke 2 hours at 34
    Bone density25–30Declines after 35; accelerates post-menopause
Brain processing speed18–20Fastest reaction times in late teens
    Working memory25–35Peaks mid-20s to early 30s
Vocabulary & knowledge60–70Crystallised intelligence keeps growing throughout life
Emotional regulation60+Older adults consistently report higher life satisfaction
Chess performance35–40Most world champions peak in their mid-30s
Mathematical ability25–30Fields Medal has an age-40 cutoff for a reason
Language learningUnder 10Native-like fluency much harder after puberty
Creativity (major works)30–40Varies by field — poets peak earlier than novelists
Earnings45–55Peak income years in most developed countries
